We are about to discover who were the Nephilim and the Sons of God, employing God’s Word for answers. This will be a short and to the point study. As with all my studies I ask that we start with a prayer for guidance and wisdom for discernment. We will ask that God treat us as He did Bezalel in Exodus 31:2,3. We pray that Our Father will fill us with His Holy Spirit, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, that we may discern truth and take God at His Word. We will also pray Proverbs 1:2-6, and 2:1-11.

To know wisdom and instruction,
To perceive the words of understanding,
To receive the instruction of wisdom,
Justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their riddles. (NKJV)

My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;
He guards the paths of justice,
And preserves the way of His saints.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice,
Equity and every good path.

10 When wisdom enters your heart,
And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
11 Discretion will preserve you; (NKJV)

Our Father in Heaven has made it known to us through Jesus Christ, that He is a God of faithfulness, reliability, stability and consistency. He is eternally, and perpetually consistent, God changes not. Malachi 3:6. God has given us enough information in Geneses 6:1-22 to really discover who the Nephilim and the Sons of God are. As stated earlier, our Father in Heaven is, if anything, uniform in his design and unchanging in character. As stated in Genesis 6:19-20, every living thing, including all flesh, will be of their Kind. With just that bit of information we should be able to put and end to the question, “who were the sons of God.”

However, we will continue to build the case.

Our God is a just God. In verse 7 of Genesis 6; God deals out punishment to His human creation. In Genesis 6:2, it states that the Sons of God took wives for themselves. “Wives” is plural, so this might be the beginning of polygamy, in the lineage of Seth. Also, the fact that the Bible uses the word “took”, many Bible scholars deem that as “forced” or “raped” the daughters of men. Strong’s definition for “took” H3947 laqah, pronounced (law-kakh), meaning, to take, marry, snatch, lay hold of or seize. If that were the case, if the sons of God were fallen angels, punishment should have been dealt out to the fallen angels, rather than the human race. Women /”daughters of men” who were seized into submission, if that were true, would have been the ones being punished for the crime committed by the fallen angels. Would it ever be justifiable to punish the rape victim of a situation, such as this? Let alone, by a God who is loving, merciful and just?

Another point to punctuate, nowhere in the Bible is it inferred that a fallen angel would be considered a son of God, especially after a fall from grace. There is another little known fact that angels do not marry. Matthew 22:30 declares it this way;

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. (NKJV)

The Word of God, from verse 1 of Geneses 6, makes it clear that God is talking about the human race. The sons of God throughout the Bible are people lead by the Spirit of God.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (NKJV)

Romans 8:14

The so called sons of God were of the lineage of Seth. They had the Spirit of God in them until lust invaded their minds and hearts, through their eyes. The daughters of men were the lineage of Cain. The devil works through our senses, we sin through our eyes, and our other senses. We many times over-indulge, through taste and smell. We lust after things and people, through sight and touch. Where God can only work through our minds and hearts, by the Holy Spirit. God, through His Holy Spirit, works from inside out, and Satan, works from outside in. He destroys us and tempts us, through our senses. As it was from the very first sin ever committed where Eve ate the forbidden fruit. The Bible compares the end days as in the days of Noah, Matthew 24:38;

38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, (NKJV).

Matthew 24:38

It does not say in this verse, as in the days of the flood, when the fallen angels were taking advantage of the daughters of men, they were eating and drinking, and given in marriage. I know many who study chapter 6 of Genesis claim the sons of God are fallen angels. They use the Book of Enoch which was written by many different authors, over a long period of time. However, by using the Bible and mainly chapter 6 of Genesis, itself, one would have to change the character of God, in order to to come to that conclusion.

We will not leave this study without a discussion about the Nephilim. The Nephilim in chapter 6:4 are giants. Strong’s H5303 from the word napil, pronounced (nef-eel) meaning giants. Plain and simple, man was of a much larger stature in those days, as stated, it was so in those days and also afterwards. The mighty men of old, men of renown. Chapter 6 of Genesis is a story of God looking down at His creation, at His human beings. Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth…(even the good seed of Seth was at risk). vs 5 continued…and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” Genesis 6:5-7. (NKJV). Therefore, the nephilim are giants, or large human beings, and the sons of God are simply the human lineage of Seth.

One would have to believe that our Father in heaven is an unjust God, that He changes design standards, and that he is not merciful to those who have been wronged, in order to come to any other conclusion.
